Dr Andrew Cannon AM

Experience

Dr Andrew Cannon AM has been recognised for his contribution to legal policy and dispute resolution by the award of a medal as a Member of the Order of Australia and by admission as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law. He is an adjunct Professor at Adelaide and Flinders University in South Australia and Münster University in Germany.

 Dispute resolution

Dr Andrew Cannon is a skilled mediator, conciliator and arbitrator and can provide cost effective solutions for landowner, civil and criminal disputes. He has unique skills to advise on the most appropriate ways to establish systems to avoid and resolve conflict. 

He has over thirty years experience as a magistrate and resolving mining disputes. He established the innovative procedure in the Magistrates Court of South Australia and the Mining Wardens Court which provides mediation, conciliation and expert appraisal to ensure that most appropriate methods to solve conflict were available. He completed a PhD on research on policies to optimise dispute resolution. Andrew is accredited as an experienced qualified mediator under the National Standard with the Resolution Institute. As a board member he assisted in the formation of that Institute from LEADR and IAMA.  

Education

Dr Andrew Cannon can assist in the design and delivery of conferences and educational events and deliver key note presentations on dispute resolution and legal systems. He has a broad experience in educating professionals and in higher education. He is an Adjunct Professor at Flinders and Adelaide Universities in South Australia and Muenster University in Germany and has devised and delivered short courses on a broad range of topics to assist dispute resolvers at all levels. He was on the curriculum development committee for the National Judicial College of Australia and has delivered educational programs to the national judges college in Germany (the Richter Akademie). He convened the Education Committee of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration (AIJA) an international legal policy and research institution and has organised and given key note presentations at many national and international conferences and has designed and delivered university short courses on Mining law, constitutional law and court systems and dispute resolution. 

Legal systems

Dr Andrew Cannon can advise you on how to better design systems to manage conflict in a cost effective way that satisfies all the participants. He has worked in and designed courts tribunal and dispute resolution systems for over thirty years. He has a particular interest in system design to encourage the minimisation of conflict and fitting the best method of dispute resolution and cost systems to resolve conflict by the methods that bring the best results for the people involved by cost effective methods. He has a particular interest designing conflict methods and cost recovery to ensure efficient use of dispute resolution systems and the use of technology to manage the effective collection and delivery of evidence.
